Tha Na Laeng train station

Tha Na Laeng train station

Can you confirm me that the immigration booth at Tha Na Laeng railway station is open upon each train arrival (2 per day at the moment) as to deliver visa to travelers? Also how to get to Wattay airport from the station without getting ripped off? I've heard that this new station is in the middle of nowhere and that local transportation requires a stiff fee to drive freshly arrived folks.

Gratefully yours, Michel

Cheapest international train ticket for a trans Mekong rail journey
by: Michel

Hi folks who want to avoid the long queues at the frienship bridge. Indeed from Nong Kai railway station the price of a train ticket to Tha Na Laeng, sole rail station in Laos, is 20 bahts. Few travelers ride that twice daily service, therefore formalities of exit and entry at either station goes swifly. One advantage to experience while riding that train : all the automobile traffic is stopped and prevented to enter the bridge. As for receiving the 30 day Lao visa, ensure that you bring a pen, photos and us$ as to facilitate your screening and save money. Negotiating the songtheow fare with other peole bound for Vientiane, 75 bahts per person. Surely this is a great way to enter Laos from Thailand. Dare try it soon !

The immigration booth at Tha Na Laeng railway station is open upon each train arrival
by: D. Phothisane

Hi Michel,

Yes I can confirm that the immigration booth at Tha Na Laeng railway station is open upon each train arrival. I just went checking it out 2 weeks ago.

It's true that the station is in the middle of nowhere, but there should be some minivans waiting for passengers there upon each train arrival. There is advertising sign at the arriving channel (next to the Visa on arrival window), that clearly states their service rates. But the rates are for going to the bus station at Morning market. If you want to go further or straight to the airport they might charge you extra fee, put your bargain skills in use. I'd think it couldn't be more that 200 or 300baht extra.

In additions to the vans there are Song Theos that take passengers from the city to the station and I believe they wait to take arriving passengers to go to the city rather than going back empty vehicle. I don't know for sure how much the song Theos charge, I guess it couldn't be more expensive than minivans. If you want to save, gather a group to share cost.

Hope this helps.
