Ways to travel from Cambodia to Laos
by: D.Phothisane

Hi Cat,

There are two ways you can go from Cambodia to Laos, by plane or by bus. But I’m not sure which one is the easiest or the best way by your standard. I’ll just give you some facts.
1. By Plane
There are daily flights from Phnom Penh to Vientiane (US$190 one-way, takes 1.5 hours), Siem Reap to Pakse (US$150 one-way, 1 hour), and Siem Reap - Luang Prabang (US$190 one-way, 1.5 hours). The prices are as of 10 March 2012. The flights are operated by Lao airlines and Vietnam airlines.

I think this way is the easiest, the fastest and the best way to got to Laos from Cambodia if there is no budget constrain. Otherwise going by bus is like three times cheaper, but it takes ten times longer. Details follow below

2. By Bus
Crossing from Cambodia to Laos by bus is the most popular among backpackers and independent travelers. It is cheap, but it takes a long time.

There is an international bus service jointly operated by the two countries. One bus daily from Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Kompong Cham, Katrie and Stung Treng to Pakse and Viantiane Capital in Laos.

A one-way ticket for Phnom Penh-Vientiane route is US$50, for Siem Reap – Vientiane is US$58, for Phnom Penh – Pakse is US$27 and Siem Reap Pakse is US$35. From Kompong Cham, Katrie, and Stung Treng to Pakse a one-way ticket costs US$20,US$18, and US$15 respectively.

Travel time is around 12-13 hours from Phnom Penh – Pakse, and it takes one or two hours longer from Siem Reap – Pakse. If you go all the way to Vientiane add another 10 hours on top of that and you have to change bus in Pakse.

Hope that gives you some ideas for your trip planning.
