Transport out of Vientiane

by Nik
(Taiwan)

Hi there,

I love this website as it gave me all I need in organizing my trip. I cannot imagine how much time and efforts was invested to get it to this level.

There is one thing I was not able to find, maybe you can point me to the right page. This is local travel, between the cities and mainly bus and boat trips out of Vientiane.

Found great amount of info Vang Vieng page but mainly connected to Vang Vieng.

Once again,
thanks a lot for this great website!

Cheers,
Nik

Transport out of Vientiane

Hi Nik,

Thanks for the nice words. I'm please to hear the info I provided on the site is helpful for you.

As for the transport out of Vientiane, I plan to include it in a very near future.

For now here is the info (from the top of my head).

Basically, from Vientiane you can get to other parts of the country by bus and plane (plane only available for some provinces).

Lao airlines flies to many provinces, the flight schedule is here FYI http://laoairlines.com/b2c/flight/pdf/01Jan2012_to_24Mar2012.pdf

There are VIP buses to most provinces from Vientiane. Buses to the north depart from northern bus station on Sithong road around 7-8km from the city of Vientiane. Northern destinations include Vang Vieng, Xiengkhuang, Luang Prabang, Luang Namtha, Oudomxai and a few others. You can also catch buses to China at this station.

Buses to the south depart from southern bus station on road 13 south (Dong Dok) around 8km from city centre. Southern destinations include Paksan, Thakaek, Savannakhet, Pakse, Salavan, and Attapeu.

You can also catch a bus to Vietnam and Cambodia at this station.

There are bus services to/from Thailand (Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Korn Khaen and Nakhon Ratchasima). The buses to Thailand depart from Central bus station near Morning Market. They are cheap.

For boat, I'm not sure if it's still available.
Maybe Lonely Planet has the info, here lonelyplanet.com/laos/vientiane/transport/getting-there-away

Hope this help (a little).

D.
